During this time of the year, root crops and tree fruits abound! Canning and fermenting are great ways to extend your enjoyment of delicious locally-grown produce. Although the season for many fruits and vegetables has passed, there is still plenty that you could preserve.
Why not try some of the following?
You'll have a great excuse to heat up that kitchen on a chilly day and your family members will love having winter access to foods that were grown and prepared at (or close to) home with love.
Just one thing to keep in mind: canning and fermenting are a science. While we usually encourage our customers to break out of their comfort zone and experiment in the kitchen, we do not recommend this while preserving. There is a delicate balance between ingredients that must be struck in order for canned foods to remain safe for consumption.
To set your mind at ease, check out these resources:
- National Center for Home Food Preservation's website (Offers a webinar video and a self-study course!)
- Or come in to browse our book selection! We have several books on preserving the harvest, canning, and fermenting that would be a great addition to any cookbook library.
Enjoy your harvest preservation and remember that canned goods make wonderful holiday gifts! By the way, don't you love our canning bumper sticker pictured above? It brought a smile to our faces and we hope it does the same for you. See you soon!
Health & happiness,
