The holidays have arrived! Can you believe it? To celebrate, we will be sharing DIY ideas throughout the season starting right now with Advent Calendars. For us, one of the best things about the holiday season is crafting with intention. That could either mean crafting gifts to give or holiday meals to share. No matter what you're making, as long as you're doing it with your whole-hearted attention you'll really be able to feel (and spread!) the spirit of the season.
DIY Advent Calendars
Counting down in December is a holiday tradition for many families. This doesn't have to be a religious practice. Your family could count down to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the end of the year, or a family gathering! Here are a few DIY countdowns that will get your creative juices flowing just in time for the holidays.
- Part 1 : The Vessels -
Sunflower decided to make its own holiday countdown this year, so we grabbed some little muslin bags (available for sale here in our store!), drew on some numbers, and hung them up! The background is so simple - it's a big piece of cardboard with tissue paper taped over it. Each muslin bag is stapled onto the cardboard through its back!
We also made the "Merry Christmas" banner pictured above out of these bags and iron-on letters from the craft store. It was so easy and makes great holiday decor.
Here's what others have come up with for DIY Advent Calendars...

- Part 2 : The Contents -
But what do I put inside? A lot of people put little chocolates or candies in their Advent Calendars, but an alternative would be tiny packets of herbs and spices (including a cocoa mix!), dried fruit, new flavors of tea bags, new ornaments to hang on the tree, or little toys (we have worry dolls, marbles, and all sorts of little goodies here at Sunflower!). You could even pick a theme, say coffee, and put one serving size of a different type of coffee in each bag! But our all time favorite Advent Calendar idea is to put family holiday activity ideas inside! This will help you make the most of the holiday season by enjoying eachothers' company. Here are some options to get you started:
- Make paper snowflakes
- See The Nutcracker
- Drive around to see the lights
- Have hot cocoa together
- Visit Santa
- Write a letter to Santa
- Attend a Christmas concert
- Go sledding together
- Hand deliver cards and gifts to friends
- Bake and decorate cookies
- Read The Polar Express
- Pick out a toy to donate to Toys for Tots
- Go caroling
- Decorate a gingerbread house
- Go ice skating together
- Attend a tree lighting ceremony
