Summer is such a wonderful time of the year! Hiking, campfires, BBQs; these fun activities are much less pleasant during the colder seasons. But there is one downfall to the glory of the summer - bugs. If you are a fan of the outdoors (or if your window fan fits no-so-seamlessly into your window), you might be in search of an all-natural alternative to chemical bug sprays.
We're here to help.
There are lots of ways to combat bugs, and of course the easiest is to buy a readymade chemical bug spray. But remember that your skin absorbs whatever you put on it and that many ingredients used to repel bugs can be toxic to our bodies and the environment, too. Here are a couple of safe and all-natural recipes for bug repellent that you can whip up to keep your family itch free!
Geranium, cedarwood, lavendar, and tea tree essential oils are all top choices for insect repelling. Any of these delightful fragrances would help to deter creepy crawlies. Stop into Sunflower some time and sniff our tester bottles and choose your favorite of these scents, then follow this recipe at home:
Combine 25 drops of the suggested essential oils (feel free to mix and match!) and 1/4 cup of water or organic apple cider vinegar in a container. Shake to blend. Dab or spray onto your skin before heading out into the bug zone!

If you don't feel like experimenting with your own custom scent, try this recipe recommended by one of our Herbalists -
Combine the following ingredients in a spray bottle:
3 1/2 ounces of witch hazel (about 1/3 cup)
1/2 tsp. lemongrass oil
1/2 tsp. eucalyptus oil
1/2 tsp. citronella oil
Shake your spray bottle before each application!
Here at Sunflower, we have everything you'll need to make your own bug spray (except a small funnel for pouring in the witch hazel, water, or apple cider vinegar). We hope to see you soon!
Wishing you health, happiness, and an itch free summer,
