On Saturday, May 9th we will be celebrating World Fair Trade Day! This is a time to consider our social and environmental responsibility and how the purchases we make affect the Earth and its people. But what exactly is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade Certified companies have passed a strict test requiring that they treat their laborers fairly and consider their environmental impact. They must provide clean, safe working conditions for their employees, as well as benefits like health care, child care, and sometimes even schooling! Fair Trade is a sustainable global effort to assist developing countries by helping these sometimes poverty-stricken people to earn a living, often with their own craft.
Today we live in a society, unfortunately, where profit often overrides the consideration of our planet and its people. Here at Sunflower, we always put people and the planet first. That's why we support Fair Trade companies like The Leakey Collection, Woodshed Roasting Company, Global Craft, and so many more.
Many people connect the phrase "Fair Trade" with coffee, but coffee isn't the only thing that can be made Fair Trade. Really, anything can be! At our store we carry everything from jewelry, to chocolate, and gifts that are certified, but even clothing can be made by companies who support Fair Trade practices. It's all about how the people making the item are treated, and how consciencious and fair the company in charge of operations is.
To find out more about Fair Trade, visit Fair Trade USA or join us on Saturday, May 9th, for our celebration. We will be giving away free samples of Fair Trade items and getting to know some of the artisans behind the arts we carry.
Now get outside and enjoy that sunshine!
