It would be wonderful if we could all choose only Certified Organic foods all of the time, but sometimes it just isn't feasible. Maybe this week you're on a very strict budget, maybe you need an ingredient quickly but can't make it to a health food store and have to settle for conventionally grown produce, maybe you want to support the farm next door, but you know their produce isn't Organic. Here are two lists that will make it a little easier on you - the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen.
These twelve fruits and veggies (plus two extras) should always be purchased Organic! During the growing process they absorb more pesticides than other foods. So whether you're buying these from a farmer's market, a grocery store chain, or here at Sunflower, choose Organic (by the way, nearly all of our produce is Organic, so you don't have to worry when you're shopping in our store!).
The Clean Fifteen
If you're in a crunch and have to choose some fruits and veggies that are not Organic, these are the ones to pick. They are resilient and able to grow well without absorbing as many of the pesticides that many farmers use during the growing process. Organic is always better, but if the choice is between non-Organic fruits and veggies or no fruits and veggies, it's okay to buy these conventionally grown.
The next time you're in Sunflower, feel free to grab our Dirty Dozen/Clean Fifteen brochure (right in the produce section) so you can keep it on you for an easy reference. And for more information on these two lists, click here!
